Knee Pain in Doha - Physio Assessment at MVP

Knee pain in active adults usually has a biomechanical cause that can be addressed with physiotherapy. Assessment identifies whether the source is the joint, the tendon, or the structures above and below.

Symptoms we commonly see

  • Pain at the front of the knee during or after running, cycling, or stair climbing.
  • Aching behind the kneecap after prolonged sitting, driving, or squatting.
  • Swelling around or inside the knee joint, particularly after training or sport.
  • Pain on the outer side of the knee that comes on after a consistent distance when running.
  • Locking, catching, or giving way of the knee during weight-bearing activities.

What drives knee pain in active adults

Most knee pain in active adults does not require surgery. The underlying mechanics are usually addressable with physiotherapy.

  • Patellofemoral pain. Malalignment of the patella in its groove, driven by hip weakness, foot mechanics, or running technique, creates pain at the front of the knee. Very common in Doha's running and padel community.
  • Patellar tendinopathy. Repetitive loading of the patellar tendon from jumping, squatting, and stop-start sports creates tendon pain below the kneecap. Often mismanaged with rest alone.
  • IT band syndrome, meniscal irritation, and joint degeneration are distinct conditions requiring different approaches. Accurate diagnosis is what determines the correct treatment plan.

How a physio-led session helps

We start with a thorough assessment: knee range of motion, ligament stability tests, patella tracking observation, and a screen of the hip and ankle mechanics. The knee is often where the pain is, but not always where the problem originates.

Treatment targets the primary driver. For patellofemoral pain, this typically involves hip strengthening, quad activation work, and taping in the short term. For tendinopathy, progressive loading of the tendon through a structured exercise protocol is the most evidence-supported approach. Manual therapy complements both by improving local tissue quality and joint mobility.

We are clear about what to expect. Most mechanical knee pain presentations improve significantly within 6-8 sessions when the correct cause is identified and addressed. We give you a realistic plan, not an open-ended programme.

When to escalate beyond physio

Some knee presentations need imaging or specialist review before physiotherapy is appropriate.

  • Significant trauma to the knee, especially with immediate swelling and inability to weight-bear.
  • A pop or giving-way episode followed by significant swelling, suggesting ligament or meniscal injury.
  • Unexplained rapid increase in swelling in the absence of trauma.
  • Knee pain in a child or young adolescent that does not fit a mechanical pattern.
  • Pain at rest and at night in a person with a history of cancer or systemic disease.

Common questions

Do I need an MRI for my knee?

For most mechanical knee pain, a clinical assessment provides more useful information than an MRI for guiding initial treatment. MRI is indicated for suspected ligament tears, meniscal injuries, or when a structural cause needs ruling out.

Should I stop running?

Not necessarily. In many cases, we can modify running load and technique while treating the underlying issue. Complete rest often delays recovery and deconditions the tendon or surrounding muscles.

How long until I can return to full training?

It depends on the diagnosis. Patellofemoral pain often allows a return to full training within 6-8 weeks. Tendinopathy may take 3-4 months to fully load again. We give you a staged return-to-sport plan.

My physio told me I have cartilage damage. Can physiotherapy still help?

Yes, in most cases. Cartilage damage identified on imaging does not always correlate with symptoms. Strengthening the muscles around the knee and optimising mechanics can produce significant pain reduction even when structural changes are present.
