Herniated Disc in Doha: Neck and Lower Back Physio at MVP
A slipped or herniated disc in the neck or lower back can cause local pain and pain that travels into the arm or leg. Physiotherapy assessment clarifies what is irritated and how hard you can safely load it.
Where you will be treated
Symptoms we commonly see
- Neck pain that spreads into the shoulder blade, arm or hand, sometimes with tingling in the fingers.
- Lower-back pain that travels into the buttock and down one leg.
- Pain that worsens with sitting, bending forward, coughing or sneezing.
- Numbness, pins and needles or a feeling of weakness in the arm or leg on one side.
- Stiffness first thing in the morning that eases partly as you start moving.
What is actually going on with a disc
The discs between the vertebrae are strong and adaptable. A herniation means part of the inner disc has pushed outward, and it may irritate a nearby nerve root. The scan finding and the pain are not always the same story.
- Load over time. Long hours sitting at a desk or in the car, looking down at a screen, then heavy lifting in the gym without enough recovery. Most disc problems build over weeks, not in a single moment.
- Nerve irritation. When the disc presses on or inflames a nerve root, pain and tingling follow the path of that nerve: into the arm for a neck disc (usually C5 to C7), into the leg for a lower-back disc (usually L4 to S1).
- Scans can mislead. Disc bulges show up on MRI in many people who have no pain at all. What matters is how your symptoms behave on examination, not only what the image shows.
How a physio-led plan helps
We start with a structured assessment: where the pain travels, which movements ease or aggravate it, and a neurological screen of sensation, reflexes and strength. This tells us whether a nerve is involved, how irritable it is, and whether you need imaging or a medical referral first.
Treatment combines hands-on work to reduce protective muscle spasm and restore movement in the neck, back and hips, with a graded exercise plan. The aim is to calm the irritated nerve first, then build back tolerance to sitting, lifting and training step by step.
Many disc herniations improve without surgery over a period of weeks to months. We are direct with you about progress: if symptoms are not settling as expected, or neurological signs worsen, we refer you for imaging and a specialist opinion.
When to seek medical care first
Some signs need urgent medical assessment before physiotherapy. We screen for them at every visit.
- Loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness around the groin or inner thighs. This is an emergency.
- Weakness in an arm or leg that is getting worse quickly.
- Pain in both arms or both legs, or difficulty walking and balancing.
- Disc symptoms after a fall, a road accident or other significant trauma.
- Fever, unexplained weight loss or night sweats alongside neck or back pain.

Common questions
Do I need an MRI before physiotherapy?
Usually not. A clinical assessment guides the first steps. We recommend imaging when there are significant neurological signs, red flags, or when symptoms do not improve as expected.
Can a herniated disc heal without surgery?
In many cases, yes. A large share of disc herniations settle over weeks to months with the right management. Surgery is considered for specific situations, such as progressive weakness or pain that does not respond to conservative care.
What can I do at home for a neck or back disc?
Keep moving within comfort, avoid long periods in one position, and change posture often. Gentle walking usually helps. Avoid pushing through sharp or spreading pain. We give you a short, specific home programme after the assessment, because the right exercises depend on how your symptoms behave.
Should I stop training?
Not necessarily. Most people can keep some training with adjustments. We will tell you which movements to keep, which to modify and which to pause while the nerve settles.
